PB PUT IT BACK
— 2019

POEM, VIDEO POEM

Poem that results from the reflection of what it means to be a microscopic organism observing the environmental catastrophe of lead contamination in the city I am part of.

Pb (Put it back)

I am a microbe enjoying a simple unicellular life

I spin and swirl

I use my flagella to travel long distances

I hear about difficult realities in other places

I want to go to them.

I see, I taste, I smell

Something is deposited here,

coming from the air to the ground.

In front of this giant concrete mass

I notice multicellular organisms have it in their bodies.

Those in developmental stages

are the most affected.

The flying organisms also complain -

They fight each other

They show an atypical behavior.

I notice that some other eukaryotic organisms,

the ones that are rooted,

have seen the problem and have decided to act.

They will keep it in their own cells,

encapsulating that which they cannot process.

Swimming organisms do their part too,

their skeletons trap the toxic material.

Even in their death state, they do something!

This shouldn’t be here,

This shouldn’t be out,

This shouldn’t be in my blood,

This shouldn’t be in your body.
